NetEase Games Issues Warning: Marvel Rivals Modders Face Potential Bans
NetEase Games, developer and publisher of the popular team shooter Marvel Rivals, has issued a stern warning to players using modifications (mods). The company explicitly stated that any form of modding, from cosmetic changes to performance-enhancing add-ons, violates the game's terms of service and risks a permanent ban.
This warning follows the release of Marvel Rivals Season 1, which introduced new heroes (Invisible Woman and Mister Fantastic from the Fantastic Four) and attempted to counter modding through a hidden asset hash check. However, workarounds quickly emerged, as reported by IGN. One such mod, created by user Prafit and available on Nexus Mods, bypasses this check. Prafit clearly states that users assume all risks, including potential account bans, and recommends the mod only for high-end PCs. Another mod, transforming Mister Fantastic into One Piece's Luffy, further highlights the modding activity.
While the existence of bans for modding remains unconfirmed, NetEase Games has reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards modifications, cheats, and hacks. Although some mods have been removed from platforms like Nexus Mods (including one featuring President-elect Donald Trump), Prafit's workaround persists, boasting over 500 downloads.
Despite past instances of erroneous bans, NetEase Games has clearly defined the consequences of violating the terms of service. The future impact of this warning and the prevalence of modding on the game's player base remains to be seen. The game, nominated for Online Game of the Year at the upcoming DICE Awards 2025, continues to enjoy significant popularity since its December 2024 launch.
