On January 19th, a temporary suspension of TikTok's US operations unexpectedly impacted Marvel Snap, the popular card game published by Nuverse (a ByteDance subsidiary). This disruption resulted in 24 hours of game inaccessibility.
While Marvel Snap is now back online, full functionality remains in progress, with in-app purchases currently unavailable. In response to this disruption, and citing political risks associated with TikTok's uncertain future in the US market, developers are exploring a publisher change and internalizing some services. This proactive measure aims to mitigate future service interruptions.
The temporary ban stemmed from TikTok's precarious legal standing, having only received a 90-day extension to finalize a deal selling 50% of its US operations. Failure to secure this agreement could lead to further blockades for TikTok and its associated projects, including Marvel Snap.
Second Dinner Studios, the game's developer, has promised further updates. While PC players via Steam remained unaffected, many users reported authorization problems. The developer expressed surprise at the event and assured players via Platform X that Marvel Snap is here to stay, emphasizing their commitment to swift restoration of full service. The lack of prior warning, particularly concerning the impact on players who made recent in-app purchases, has been a significant point of concern.
