In the world of Persona 5 Royal, leveling up your team is crucial for success. Without adequate levels, you'll find yourself struggling against formidable late-game bosses and spending precious time grinding in Mementos. As an enhanced version of the original Persona 5, Persona 5 Royal introduces numerous quality-of-life improvements and adds over 20 hours of new content.
This update brings a new semester for the Phantom Thieves and modifies some pre-existing boss battles. With all this new material, maintaining high levels for your team is essential, and understanding the most efficient methods to gain experience is key to staying ahead.
Updated on January 13, 2025, by Renri Seong: Over-leveling can make the game too easy, but you'll want to match the level of Palace Rulers, especially in a new playthrough. There are several strategies to make experience farming more efficient in P5R, from leveraging Confidant Skills to utilizing Jose in Mementos. Joker can also earn EXP for his non-active Personas with a specific passive skill. This guide has been updated to include a new section on using the Insta-kill ability to quickly farm experience.
Accessories and The Moon Arcana
Mishima Yuuki's Confidant
In Persona 5 Royal, players can enhance their experience gain by downloading the free Team Glasses DLC from the PlayStation Store. These glasses boost EXP gain by 15% when equipped as an accessory by each character. However, only Joker and three other Phantom Thieves can be in battle at once, meaning the backline members receive less EXP.
To address this, players should focus on ranking up the Moon Confidant, Mishima Yuuki. Reaching Rank 3 and Rank 5 allows backup team members to gain EXP. By maxing out Mishima's Confidant at Rank 10, the backup members earn the same amount of EXP as the frontliners. To progress Mishima's Confidant, choose dialogue options that resonate with him and bring a Persona of the Moon Arcana when spending time with him.
In Persona 5 Royal, Mishima's Mementos Missions are linked to his Confidant, so neglecting these missions can hinder your ability to rank up.
Mementos: Increase EXP Gain
Cognition of Mementos
Persona 5 Royal introduces Jose, a character who may not be central to the plot but offers significant gameplay advantages. In Mementos, you'll find "flowers" and "Stamp Stations." Collecting these allows you to trade with Jose for items or to modify the Cognition of Mementos. In Jose's Shop, under the Cognition menu, you can choose to increase EXP, Money, or Item rewards within Mementos. Boosting EXP from battles to 110% costs 5 Stamps, while maxing it out at 200% requires 12 Stamps.
There are 165 Stamps in total, but you'll need 85 to maximize EXP gain. Stamp Stations are hidden in "dead ends" behind breakable walls on Mementos floors, and you may encounter Jose when transitioning to a new floor.
Fight the Reaper
What Level is the Reaper?
The Reaper, a notorious enemy in the Persona series, appears in Mementos if you linger too long on a floor. Signs of his approach include a blinking red screen, the sound of chains, and warnings from Morgana or Futaba.
Early in the game, defeating the Reaper is nearly impossible without a New Game+ file, as he wields -dyne tier spells and Support skills like Concentrate and elemental Breaks. At level 85, with extremely high stats, his lowest stat, Agility (75), still outpaces most unprepared Phantom Thieves.
However, defeating the Reaper yields a massive amount of EXP and money, often resulting in level-ups for all characters. It's advisable to challenge him at level 60 or higher, using Defense-raising Support skills and Makarakarn to reflect his magic. Alternatively, if you've purchased the Persona DLC featuring Izanagi-no-Okami (Picaro), you can stack Concentrate, Heat Riser, and use Myriad Truths to inflict heavy Almighty damage three times.
Defeat Treasure Demons
How to Summon Treasure Demons
Treasure Demons, unique Shadows, first appear in Madarame's Palace and can be found throughout the Metaverse. Unlike other Shadows, they are harmless and tend to flee after a few turns.
Different Treasure Demons have varied Affinity Weaknesses and Immunities, but all are susceptible to regular damage from Almighty attacks. To defeat them before they escape, use Shinya's Rank 1 Ability, Down Shot, to down them and follow up with an All-Out Attack. Alternatively, try using high-crit attacks like Morgana's Miracle Punch, provided the Treasure Demon doesn't null Physical damage.
Treasure Demons appear in Palaces with high security. You can also craft the Treasure Trap infiltration tool to boost encounters, using the following materials:
- 2x Silk Yarn
- 3x Plant Balm
- 1x Cork Bark
Use Persona with EXP Skills
How to Get Growth Passive Skill
Typically, Personas not equipped by Joker at the end of a battle do not earn EXP. However, Personas with the Growth passive skill can still gain a percentage of the battle's EXP even if they're not used. There are three levels of Growth Skills:
- Growth 1: Persona gains a quarter EXP when inactive.
- Growth 2: Persona gains half EXP when inactive.
- Growth 3: Persona gains full EXP when inactive.
The following Personas learn Growth at these levels:
- Growth 1: Saki Mitama (level 7), Koppa Tengu (level 12)
- Growth 2: Lachesis (Innate), Kurama Tengu (level 36), Thoth (level 42), Ananta (level 47)
- Growth 3: Izanagi (level 25), Izanagi Picaro (level 28), Narcissus (level 50), Raphael (level 81)
With the Electric Chair in the Velvet Room, you can turn Personas into Skill Cards. However, in Persona 5 Royal, only Izanagi Picaro transforms into a Growth Skill Card (Growth 3). Growth 1 Skill Cards are unavailable in P5R.
To obtain the Growth 2 Skill Card, take Caroline and Justine to Miura Beach between September 2nd and September 29th, after clearing event 6 (Sky Tower). Spend time with them during evenings by the Velvet Room Door outside of Mementos.
Ryuji Sakamoto's Confidant
How to Unlock Insta-Kill
Insta-kill allows Joker to instantly defeat a Shadow without engaging in battle, provided you ambush the enemy and Joker's level is 10 levels higher than the Shadow's. In Persona 5 Royal, a successful Insta-kill not only defeats the Shadow but also rewards items, yen, experience, and potentially a new Persona.
To determine if a Shadow can be insta-killed, use Joker's Third Eye ability; Shadows with a green outline are vulnerable.
Unlocking Insta-kill requires reaching Rank 7 in Ryuji Sakamoto's Confidant. Ryuji's Confidant is one of the easiest to max out due to the absence of Social Stat requirements. To expedite the process, spend time with Ryuji and select the best dialogue options to earn the most points. It's advisable to prioritize this before unlocking other Confidants.
