Minecraft marked its 15th anniversary last year, and while it’s entered those turbulent teenage years, developer Mojang shows no intention of replacing it with a sequel.
During a recent visit to the Stockholm studio, IGN inquired about the possibility of a follow-up to the best-selling game of all time. Ingela Garneij, executive producer of Minecraft Vanilla, offered a witty yet definitive reply: “Do you think we’re getting an Earth 2? No, no—there won’t be a Minecraft 2.”
Although Minecraft 2.0 clearly isn’t in the works, that doesn’t mean the crafting-survival phenomenon won’t continue to grow. In fact, the team’s plans extend far into the future—with ambitions to at least double the game’s current lifespan.
“We’ve been around for 15 years,” Garneij explained. “We aim to be here for at least another 15, so Agnes [Larsson, Minecraft Vanilla’s game director] and I work as a team. Together, we set the vision and strategy for what comes next.”
This drive stems from Mojang’s passion for innovation—continuing to “mine and craft,” figuratively speaking, building fresh ideas upon its sturdy core. Still, Garneij acknowledged that those foundations are showing their age. While there are no plans for a full engine overhaul, it does mean new content—such as the recently announced Vibrant Visuals graphics update—takes more time to implement.
“The game’s age is definitely a challenge,” admitted Garneij. “It’s a 15-year-old platform, built on 15-year-old technology, which can slow us down in some ways. Newer games run on modern engines and can move much faster. So I’d say our technology and age are probably our greatest hurdles.”
Even so, Minecraft remains one of the world’s most popular games, and by all appearances, its momentum isn’t fading. There are also no plans to shift to a free-to-play model or integrate generative AI. Just don’t expect Minecraft 2 anytime soon—at least, not on this planet.
