Unlocking Multiple Pets
Initially, Stardew Valley limited players to one pet. However, the 1.6 update changed that! To unlock the ability to adopt more pets, you must fully maximize your existing pet's friendship level. This involves:
- Daily Watering: Ensure your pet's bowl is full daily (except on rainy/snowy days). Use your Watering Can.
- Daily Petting: Interact with your pet daily to see a heart appear above its head.
- Friendship Check: Monitor your pet's friendship level via the "Animals" tab in the pause menu.
Once friendship is maxed, Marnie will email you, informing you of additional pets available at her shop (or at the start of Year 2 if you didn't adopt a pet initially).
Adopting Multiple Pets
After receiving Marnie's email, visit her shop (9:00 AM - 4:00 PM, closed Mondays and Tuesdays). Select the "Adopt Pets" option. You'll find 12 pet licenses:
Pet License | Cost |

Brown Cat | 40,000g |
Grey Cat | 40,000g |
Orange Cat | 40,000g |
White Cat | 40,000g |
Black Cat | 40,000g |
Brown Dog w/ Blue Collar | 40,000g |
Brown Dog (Shepherd) | 40,000g |
Brown Dog w/ Red Collar | 40,000g |

Purple Turtle | 500,000g |
Obtaining Pet Supplies
Before or after adopting, visit Robin's shop to commission Pet Bowls (5,000g and 25 Hardwood each). These are essential; neglecting a pet's bowl can lead to it running away.
Marnie also sells optional decorative items like doghouses and cat trees. These don't affect friendship.
