A brand-new era for Superman is officially on the way, courtesy of James Gunn. With it comes Nathan Fillion’s take on Guy Gardner, a more unfiltered version of the Green Lantern that fans are sure to remember. In a recent chat with TV Guide, Fillion didn’t hold back when describing his character — bluntly calling him “a jerk.” But according to the actor, being a bit of a troublemaker doesn’t disqualify someone from becoming a hero.
“You don't have to be good to be a Green Lantern; you just have to be fearless,” Fillion explained. “Guy Gardner is fearless, and he's not very good. He's not nice. And as an actor, that's really freeing because I can ask myself, what is the most selfish, self-serving thing I can do in this moment? That’s the answer. That’s exactly what you do.”
Fillion also touched on Guy Gardner’s over-the-top confidence, hinting at how inflated the character’s ego might be. “I think if he has a superpower, it might be his overconfidence — like thinking he could actually take on Superman,” he joked. “Spoiler alert: He can't!”
This upcoming *Superman* film marks the beginning of James Gunn’s reimagined DC Universe, titled *Gods and Monsters*. It will serve as the launchpad for a new cinematic vision under DC Studios. Meanwhile, HBO is also developing its own live-action series called *Lanterns*, focusing on other members of the Green Lantern Corps, including Hal Jordan (played by Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (portrayed by Aaron Pierre). The show is currently in production and expected to debut in 2026.
