The Xbox Developer Direct 2025 delivered a double dose of Ninja Gaiden news, unveiling both Ninja Gaiden 4 and a Ninja Gaiden 2 Black remake. Team Ninja, celebrating its 30th anniversary, declared 2025 "The Year of the Ninja."

A New Era of Ninjas
Ninja Gaiden 4, a direct sequel to Ninja Gaiden 3 after a 13-year hiatus, is a collaboration between Team Ninja and PlatinumGames. The game introduces a new protagonist, Yakumo, a young ninja from the rival Raven clan striving for mastery.

Art Director Tomoko Nishii (PlatinumGames) describes Yakumo as a character designed to stand alongside Ryu Hayabusa, while Producer/Director Yuji Nakao (PlatinumGames) explains that the new hero aims to broaden the series' appeal while still satisfying longtime fans. Ryu Hayabusa remains a significant figure, serving as both a formidable opponent and a benchmark for Yakumo's growth. Ryu will also be playable.
Revitalized Combat
Ninja Gaiden 4 retains the series' signature brutal, fast-paced combat, introducing the "Bloodbind Ninjutsu Nue Style" alongside Yakumo's Raven Style. Team Ninja's Masazaku Hirayama assures fans that despite the new styles, the action will feel authentically Ninja Gaiden. Nakao highlights the blend of classic Ninja Gaiden challenge with PlatinumGames' signature speed and dynamism. The game is currently 70-80% complete and in the polishing stage.

Fall 2025 Release
Ninja Gaiden 4 is slated for a Fall 2025 release on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5. It will be a day-one Xbox Game Pass title. Producer Fumihiko Yasuda (Team Ninja) highlighted the collaborative effort with PlatinumGames, emphasizing their shared vision for the franchise's revival.

Ninja Gaiden 2 Black: A Modern Classic
The Ninja Gaiden 2 Black remake, based on the 2008 Xbox 360 title, is available now on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5, and included with Xbox Game Pass. This enhanced version features additional playable characters from Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 (Ayane, Momiji, and Rachel), offering a modern take on the classic experience. Yasuda explains the remake’s creation as a way to provide fans with something to enjoy while awaiting Ninja Gaiden 4.
