Nintendo is prepared to combat Switch 2 launch shortages and scalpers, stating, "We are making preparations." Following its latest financial report, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa addressed concerns about a repeat of the original Switch's 2017 launch shortages. He confirmed to Nikkei, as translated by VGC, that Nintendo will implement measures learned from past experiences with scalpers.
These preparations likely involve significantly increasing Switch 2 production. Last year, Nintendo emphasized sufficient manufacturing to meet demand as the primary strategy against scalpers. The original Switch's limited supply in March 2017 fueled inflated prices from scalpers. However, Furukawa stated in July 2024 that the Switch successor's launch will be different. He reiterated the importance of sufficient production to counter resale issues, adding that they are exploring additional measures within legal and regulatory frameworks. Component shortages, which impacted Switch production in previous years, are no longer a significant concern.
A Switch 2 Direct is scheduled for April 2nd, promising further details. Hands-on events will also be held globally.
Furukawa also addressed declining Switch sales, dismissing the idea that consumers are significantly delaying purchases in anticipation of the Switch 2. He described the Switch's eighth year as "solid," although short of targets. Nintendo plans to continue supporting the original Switch as long as demand persists. This commitment includes the 2025 releases of Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond on the original Switch.
