Steam Player Count Goes Up After Patch 8 Release

Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) has finally launched its long-awaited final patch, marking the end of an era for this beloved RPG. On April 15, 2025, Larian Studios released BG3’s Patch 8, the game's last major update. The finality of this update has caused a significant increase in the game's player count, pushing it just outside of Steam’s top 10 most played games. Previously averaging around 60,000 concurrent players, BG3 has now surged to over 169,000 players as of this writing.

Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke took to Twitter (X) on April 22 to comment on the sudden rise in players following the release of Patch 8. He highlighted the thriving mod support, which allows the studio to focus on their "next big thing." It was previously announced that Larian Studios will be moving away from the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) Universe to explore new ventures.

As a result, D&D's owner, Wizards of the Coast, along with Hasbro, will continue the Baldur’s Gate franchise without Larian Studios. They are currently in discussions with other potential partners about which studio could take on the development of a possible Baldur’s Gate 4.

12 New Subclasses, Photo Mode, and More!

The final patch has been in development since it was first announced in November 2024 via a Steam blog post. Patch 8 includes 12 new subclasses, a photo mode, cross-play, and numerous other enhancements. The developers have provided a detailed breakdown of the patch's contents on BG3’s official website. Compared to their November 2024 post, the latest patch notes feature an extensive list of bug fixes and combat balance adjustments, ensuring a comprehensive and polished final update for BG3.

Larian Studios has invested significantly in improving BG3, as evidenced by the multitude of fixes and updates in this final version. Although this is their last major patch, Larian remains committed to supporting the game's modding community.
