PS5 Disc Drive Restocks at Select US Retailers – But Act Fast!
The PlayStation 5 disc drive is back in stock at some major US retailers, including Amazon and PlayStation Direct, as of mid-January 2025. However, given past trends, this limited restock is unlikely to last.
The scarcity stems from the release of the PS5 Digital Edition in 2020 and, more recently, the PS5 Pro in November 2024. Neither the Pro nor the Slim models offer a built-in disc drive option, forcing users who want physical media compatibility to purchase the drive separately. This high demand has led to prolonged shortages in the US, and even the UK since late 2024.
While Amazon and PlayStation Direct currently offer the drive at the standard $79.99 MSRP, availability is limited. PlayStation Direct, in particular, restricts purchases to one per customer to deter scalpers. A third-party Walmart seller was also found offering the drive, but at a significantly inflated price of $122 with only a few units remaining. Major retailers like Walmart, GameStop, and Best Buy remain out of stock.
Where to Buy (as of January 15, 2025):
| Store | Price |
|---|---|
| Amazon | $79.99 |
| PlayStation Direct | $79.99 |
| Walmart (Reseller) | $122 |
The ongoing shortage strongly suggests a connection to the PS5 Pro's design. The lack of a disc drive option on the Pro model creates significant demand for the separate drive, particularly for those seeking the best possible gaming experience combined with physical media playback. The duration of this shortage remains uncertain.
