Sony Ditches PSN Account Requirement for Select PC Ports
Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced a significant change to its PC port strategy, making PlayStation Network (PSN) accounts optional for several PlayStation 5 titles released on PC. This decision follows player feedback and aims to improve accessibility for a wider audience.
Goodbye PSN Logins (For Some Games)
Starting after the January 30, 2025 launch of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 on PC, players will no longer need a PSN account to access several PC ports. This change affects titles including Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, God of War Ragnarök, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, and the upcoming The Last of Us Part II Remastered (April 2025). However, it's important to note that other single-player titles, such as Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut and Until Dawn, will continue to require PSN logins.
PSN Perks Remain
While PSN accounts are no longer mandatory, Sony is incentivizing players who choose to link their accounts. Benefits include access to trophies, friend management features, and exclusive in-game content:
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2: Early unlock of the Spider-Man 2099 Black Suit and Miles Morales 2099 Suit.
- God of War Ragnarök: The Armor of the Black Bear set for Kratos (previously only available in New Game+) and a resource bundle.
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered: 50 bonus points, unlocking extra features and Ellie's Jordan's Jacket skin.
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered: The Nora Valiant outfit.
Sony plans to introduce further incentives in the future.
Addressing Past Backlash
This policy shift follows significant criticism regarding the mandatory PSN account requirement for some PC ports, notably Helldivers 2 and God of War Ragnarök in 2024. The limited global availability of PSN (approximately 70 countries) presented significant barriers for players in unsupported regions. The previous requirement also raised privacy concerns due to the need to share personal information with a third-party service. This updated approach reflects Sony's commitment to learning and adapting to the needs of its PC player base.
