RuneScape: Dragonwilds shocked fans with its sudden early access announcement. During the April 16 livestream, developer Jagex revealed the survival game's immediate availability on Steam, following weeks after its debut trailer.

The community was astonished – Steam wishlists only opened April 1, followed by the first gameplay teaser on April 2. Originally teased in 2022, concrete details emerged late 2024 when Jagex began alpha signups for their "new survival game set in the RuneScape universe." The official title reveal occurred March 31, 2025.

Scheduled Full Release Early 2026

Developers project Dragonwilds will fully launch early 2026. "We're dedicating proper development time to ensure players receive a polished, replayable experience worth sharing with friends," stated the team.

Jagex Executive Producer Jesse America emphasized Dragonwilds represents a fresh direction for the franchise, noting that early access marks just the beginning of their creative process.

"We'll implement regular content updates throughout Early Access while incorporating community feedback to craft an immersive survival experience appealing to both veteran fans and newcomers," America explained.

Early Access Content Roadmap

Jagex disclosed their comprehensive update plan during early access. Headlining additions include Fellhollow – a mysterious realm straddling life and death.

This treacherous domain is governed by Imaru, a soul-consuming dragon warped by Ashenfall's wild anima and underworld energies. Players will encounter familiar faces like Death while uncovering new quests, lore, equipment, and musical scores. Magic systems, ranged combat, and farming mechanics will also receive skill expansions.

Additional content includes Lesser Dragons as new adversaries, dragon-slaying equipment, hardcore and creative gamemodes, among other surprises. While specific release dates weren't provided, developers promised continuous enhancements.
