Sebastian Stan has opened up about his career challenges before landing his breakout role as the Winter Soldier in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Stan shared how a surprise $65,000 residuals check from Hot Tub Time Machine essentially rescued him financially right before he was cast as Bucky Barnes in Captain America: The First Avenger. The actor played antagonist Blaine in the 2010 sci-fi comedy before transitioning to Marvel's superhero world alongside Chris Evans.
"I was actually going through a tough time career-wise," Stan revealed. "Right after hanging up with my financial manager who told me about unexpected residuals saving me with that check."
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told Vanity Fair they saw special potential in Stan despite his relative obscurity at the time.
"There was this incredible depth you could see behind his eyes," Feige recalled. "I remember telling one of our producers, 'He'll make a solid Bucky, but he's going to be phenomenal as the Winter Soldier.'"
Stan's portrayal proved prophetic - he's reprised the role across multiple films including Captain America sequels, Avengers installments, this year's Brave New World, and will return in Thunderbolts next month. His inclusion in the Avengers: Doomsday casting suggests Bucky Barnes remains an MCU fixture for years to come.
