FromSoftware recently unveiled additional details about their highly anticipated Switch 2 exclusive, The Duskbloods. The collaboration with Nintendo seems to have significantly influenced both the game’s style and the design of its hub area’s guardian figure, giving it a surprisingly charming twist.
The trailer showcased during the Switch 2 Direct concluded with a captivating image of a winged rat adorned with glowing glyphs, gazing directly at the viewer. Fans were quick to speculate about the significance of this peculiar creature. As it turns out, this enigmatic rodent is set to become the player’s new hub companion.
"This character serves a similar purpose to the Fire Keepers from the Dark Souls series, remaining within the hub area to offer players advice and guidance," explained director Hidetaka Miyazaki in an interview with Nintendo.
Miyazaki went on to describe the collaborative effort, saying, "We aimed to incorporate something distinctly Nintendo-like into the project, reflecting our partnership."
When pressed further about what he meant by "Nintendo-esque," Miyazaki chuckled and revealed, "For once, we decided to go for something cute. Though I must admit, this character is actually an elderly gentleman."
FromSoftware’s iconic shrine keepers have always played pivotal roles in guiding players through their intricate worlds. Characters such as Melina, the Maiden in Black, and the Doll have become staples, returning repeatedly to empower players and aid their progress.
In The Duskbloods, however, the nature of this winged rat companion’s assistance remains shrouded in mystery, especially given the game’s PvPvE mechanics. Miyazaki hinted that the development team at FromSoftware has introduced numerous innovative concepts, promising surprises when the game launches on Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026.
Stay tuned for more updates on The Duskbloods, including reactions from Bloodborne fans and Miyazaki’s thoughts on FromSoftware’s future direction regarding single-player experiences.
