Excitement is building as *Split Fiction*, the upcoming film adaptation of Hazelight Studios’ critically acclaimed video game, starts to take shape. According to Variety, rising star Sydney Sweeney (known for her roles in *Euphoria* and *Madame Web*) has officially joined the cast. She’s set to bring one of the game’s twin protagonists—either Zoe or Mio—to life on the big screen, although which character she’ll portray remains under wraps for now.
Directed by Jon M. Chu (*Wicked*, *Crazy Rich Asians*), the film will be written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (*Deadpool & Wolverine*), two screenwriters known for blending humor, action, and heart. Story Kitchen—the production company behind successful video game adaptations like the *Sonic* films—is spearheading the project and currently shopping the talent package to major Hollywood studios, sparking anticipation of a competitive bidding process.
What Is Split Fiction?
For those unfamiliar, *Split Fiction* is a co-op adventure game that launched in March and quickly became a commercial and critical success, selling over 2 million copies within its first week. As a launch title for the Nintendo Switch 2, it showcased Hazelight Studios’ signature flair for creative gameplay and cinematic storytelling.
IGN awarded the game a stellar 9/10, praising it as “an expertly crafted co-op adventure that pinballs from one genre extreme to another.” The review continued: “Split Fiction is a rollercoaster of constantly refreshed gameplay ideas and styles—and one that’s very hard to walk away from.”
Hollywood Loves Hazelight
This isn’t the only Hazelight title heading toward the silver screen. The studio’s smash hit *It Takes Two*, which has sold over 23 million copies worldwide, is also being adapted into a film—with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson reportedly in talks to star.
While nothing is guaranteed until contracts are signed, the current popularity of video game adaptations makes these projects particularly appealing to Hollywood executives. With the right creative team and talent attached, both *Split Fiction* and *It Takes Two* could become blockbuster franchises in their own right.
More From Story Kitchen
Story Kitchen continues to expand its slate of gaming-inspired films. In addition to *Split Fiction*, the company is developing adaptations of Square Enix’s *Just Cause*, with *Blue Beetle* director Ángel Manuel Soto attached. They’re also working on *Dredge: The Movie*, *Kingmakers*, and the gritty undercover cop drama *Sleeping Dogs*. Even more unexpectedly, they’re crafting a live-action feature based on the beloved toy retailer Toys 'R' Us.
What’s Next for Hazelight?
While the film buzz grows, Hazelight Studios remains focused on its core strength: making innovative games. The team has already begun teasing details about their next unannounced title, keeping fans guessing what wild gameplay twists await in their future adventures.
