Tencent, the Chinese tech giant, has significantly increased its stake in Kuro Games, the developer behind the popular mobile games Wuthering Waves and Punishing: Gray Raven. This acquisition marks a major shift in the company's ownership structure.
Tencent's Expanded Investment in Kuro Games
Tencent's shareholding in Kuro Games has jumped to approximately 51.4%, securing a controlling interest. This follows an initial investment in 2023 and the subsequent withdrawal of other shareholders. Tencent is now the sole external shareholder.
Despite this significant acquisition, Kuro Games assures fans and employees that operational independence will be maintained. The company cites a model similar to Tencent's relationships with Riot Games (developers of League of Legends and Valorant) and Supercell (Clash of Clans and Brawl Stars). Kuro Games' official statement emphasizes that this change will foster a more stable environment and support its long-term independent strategy. Tencent has yet to release an official statement.
Kuro Games, a prominent Chinese developer, is celebrated for its successful action RPGs. Punishing: Gray Raven and the recently released open-world RPG Wuthering Waves have each generated over $120 million USD in revenue and continue to receive regular updates. The success of Wuthering Waves is further evidenced by its nomination for Players' Voice at The Game Awards.
