In the world of Avowed, Companions not only enrich the narrative and dialogue but also play critical roles in gameplay mechanics, from unlocking new paths to enhancing combat strategies. Here's a ranking of every Avowed Companion, from least to most effective, based on their practical utility and combat prowess.
Marius
During my journey through Avowed, I found Marius's abilities to be somewhat misaligned with my preferred play style. While he excels at early-game exploration by helping to uncover items and plants, his combat contributions quickly become overshadowed by other Companions. Here's a breakdown of Marius's abilities and their potential upgrades:
- Blinding Roots: Roots enemies in place for 8 seconds, with upgrades to stun, trap multiple enemies, and cause Bleed Accumulation.
- Heart Seeker: Fires a piercing shot that always hits, with upgrades for multiple targets, increased damage to low-health enemies, and a cooldown reduction.
- Shadow Step: Vanishes and reappears to attack an enemy, with upgrades for instant kills on stunned foes, increased damage to low-health enemies, and multiple strikes.
- Wounding Shots: Causes Bleed Accumulation with attacks, with upgrades to reduce enemy damage reduction, slow hit enemies, and decrease enemy damage.
Marius's abilities focus on controlling and weakening enemies, which can be useful against specific enemy types, particularly if your Envoy is melee-focused. However, his niche utility and lack of raw power make him less desirable for the majority of your adventures in the Living Lands.
Giatta
Giatta, an Animancer, specializes in support, using her magic to heal, shield, and buff the party. While she may not excel in direct damage, her abilities are invaluable in high-stress scenarios, such as boss fights. Here's a look at Giatta's abilities:
- Purification: Heals allies by 25% of their maximum Health, with upgrades for increased healing, interrupting enemies, and boosting damage reduction.
- Barrier: Grants temporary health to allies, with upgrades for more health, healing upon barrier expiration, and protection from melee attacks.
- Acceleration: Boosts allies' move and attack speed, with upgrades for damage reduction, extended duration, and reduced ability cooldowns.
- Reconstruction: Heals allies with attacks, with upgrades for greater healing to critically low-health allies, temporary health boosts, and reviving allies upon killing an enemy.
Giatta's utility extends beyond combat, as she can power Essence Generators to unlock new areas and access late-game loot. She synergizes well with Envoys using Wizard builds, making her a valuable asset in certain team compositions.
Kai
As the first Companion you meet in Avowed, Kai remains a reliable ally throughout your journey. Known for his tank-like durability and effective damage output, Kai requires minimal micromanagement. Here are his abilities and upgrades:
- Fire and Ire: Fires a high-stun shot from his Blunderbuss, with upgrades to ignite targets, increase stun, and reduce cooldown.
- Unbending Defense: Regenerates health and increases damage reduction, with upgrades for further damage reduction, increased health regeneration, and a damaging shockwave.
- Leap of Daring: Stuns and taunts enemies with a leap attack, with upgrades for increased area of effect, temporary health, and bonus attack damage.
- Second Wind: Revives himself with 50% health, with upgrades for higher health restoration, increased attack speed, and resetting cooldowns.
Kai's versatility shines in both single-target and crowd control scenarios, and his self-revival ability makes him an invaluable asset in combat. Additionally, his fire-based abilities can clear obstacles, enhancing exploration.
Yatzli
Yatzli, a powerful Wizard, brings high-damage and crowd control abilities to the team, making her an essential part of any party in Avowed. Here are her abilities and upgrades:
- Essence Explosion: Causes explosive arcane damage, with upgrades for a larger blast, fire accumulation, and reduced cooldown.
- Minoletta’s Missile Battery: Launches a volley of arcane missiles, with upgrades for increased fire rate, range, and shock accumulation.
- Arduos Delay of Motion: Slows enemies, with upgrades for intensified slowing, area of effect, and frost accumulation.
- Blast: Creates an area of effect on hit, with upgrades for explosive damage to break blocks, destroy walls, and inflict status effects like Frozen, Ignited, or Shocked.
Yatzli's potent abilities align well with her fierce nature, and her capacity to clear obstacles further enhances her utility. As the last Companion you'll recruit, Yatzli is a must-have for the remainder of your journey through the Living Lands.
Avowed is set to release on PC and Xbox on February 18, promising an engaging experience with these dynamic Companions.
