Fans of the Marvel universe and the gritty streets of Hell's Kitchen may be disappointed to learn that the iconic villain Wilson Fisk, portrayed by Vincent D’Onofrio, is not slated to appear on the big screen anytime soon. In a recent candid discussion on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with host Josh Horowitz, D’Onofrio shared insights into the complex world of character rights that prevent his portrayal of Fisk from being featured in Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films.
"The only thing I know is not positive," D’Onofrio revealed, delving into the intricacies of intellectual property and character usage. "It's a very hard thing to do, for Marvel to use my character. It's a very hard thing to do, because of ownership and stuff." He elaborated that his version of Wilson Fisk is restricted to television appearances, dashing hopes of seeing him in standalone movies or major MCU events such as Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday. This limitation also raises questions about the feasibility of a potential Charlie Cox Daredevil movie, where Fisk's presence would be expected.
D’Onofrio first brought Wilson Fisk, also known as Kingpin, to life in the 2015 Netflix series Marvel’s Daredevil. Over three seasons and nearly 40 episodes, his nuanced portrayal of New York City’s formidable crimelord and future mayor has won acclaim from both fans and critics. D’Onofrio's commitment to his character extends to his method of drawing inspiration from classic performances. In an interview with IGN last month, he discussed how the humble demeanor of actors like Harrison Ford in action scenes influenced his own approach to playing Fisk.
"Anytime they were in a fight, or they were holding a gun, they looked nervous," D’Onofrio noted, emphasizing the realism that such vulnerability brings to action sequences. He cited Gary Cooper's role in Sergeant York as a prime example, praising the humility in Cooper's eyes when he takes aim. "I think that helps action stuff a lot. We're all very conscious of that," D’Onofrio added, highlighting the importance of this approach in bringing authenticity to his performances.
Currently, fans can catch D’Onofrio's compelling performance in Daredevil: Born Again, which is airing weekly on Disney+ and is set to conclude its first season on April 15, 2025. While the big screen may be off-limits for now, viewers can still enjoy Fisk's complex character on the small screen.
