Amazon’s upcoming God of War TV series, before even premiering, has already secured a two-season order, according to showrunner Ronald D. Moore. Moore stepped into the role after the departure of previous showrunner Rafe Judkins and executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus. In a conversation with fellow Battlestar Galactica alum Katee Sackhoff, Moore revealed, "Right now, I'm working on an adaptation of a video game called God of War, a big title in the gaming world that Amazon has ordered two seasons of and they've asked me to come in. So I'm literally in the writer's room, and working on that. That's my new thing."
He admitted to not being a gamer himself, though he enjoys classic arcade games like Defender, Asteroids, and Centipede. His experience with modern controllers, however, proved less successful: "'Press R1.' Which one's R1? Oh, I'm dead," he joked.
For the God of War series, Moore will serve as writer, executive producer, and showrunner. His impressive resume includes work on Star Trek: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and the acclaimed 2000s Battlestar Galactica. While some of the original team departed, Sony's Cory Barlog remains on board as an executive producer. The series will be based on the critically acclaimed 2018 God of War game.
Amazon's history of quickly renewing successful video game adaptations, such as the Fallout TV show and Secret Level, suggests a positive outlook for the God of War series' streaming prospects.
