Helldivers 2 developers Arrowhead have reassured fans that they remain fully committed to the game, despite mentioning their next project, "Game 6." In a recent discussion on the official Helldivers Discord, CEO Shams Jorjani addressed concerns sparked by a quote about their future plans, emphasizing that Helldivers 2 is their main focus and will continue to be for a long time.
Jorjani explained that thanks to the strong support from the community, Arrowhead has the freedom to explore new concepts with Game 6. However, he quickly dispelled any fears of abandoning Helldivers 2, stating, "Nah. It's ALL Helldivers 2 for now. A very, very small team will spin up something later this year and go at it slowly. Helldivers is our main focus and will be for a loooong time."
The longevity of Helldivers 2's content updates depends on player engagement and purchases of Super Credits, the game's virtual currency used for Premium Warbonds. Jorjani noted that last summer things looked uncertain, but with the community's support, the future looks bright.
In response to a fan's request to avoid region-locking issues seen with Helldivers 2, Jorjani revealed that Game 6 will be 100% self-funded by Arrowhead, suggesting a departure from their partnership with Sony and hinting that it won't be Helldivers 3.
Discussing Game 6's development, Jorjani highlighted lessons learned from Helldivers 2's eight-year development cycle, which was challenging but ultimately successful. For their next game, Arrowhead plans to focus on nailing the core elements early on before expanding, aiming to streamline the development process.
Despite the challenges and controversies Helldivers 2 has faced since its record-breaking launch as the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game with 12 million copies sold in 12 weeks, Arrowhead's dedication remains strong. Production director Alex Bolle told IGN that they want Helldivers 2 to last for many years, continuously introducing new features and systems while staying true to the game's core identity.
Recent leaks suggest exciting new content on the horizon, including the potential addition of Super Earth as a playable map as the Illuminate invasion progresses.
