The critically acclaimed Shōgun, recipient of 18 Emmy Awards and 4 Golden Globes, is officially returning for a second season – with production plans already in motion. Cosmo Jarvis, who portrays ship pilot John Blackthorne, has confirmed his return alongside an upgraded role as co-executive producer, according to FX's official announcement.
Series lead Hiroyuki Sanada – who committed to Season 2 last May following the surprise renewal – has been promoted to executive producer after serving as producer during the initial limited series run. Production will commence in January 2026, returning to the original Vancouver filming locations.
A Bold New Chapter
FX describes Season 2 as "an entirely original continuation" of the story that began with James Clavell's novel adaptation. The network explained the temporal connection between seasons:
"Season one depicted Lord Yoshii Toranaga's (Sanada) strategic battle for survival against the united Council of Regents. The discovery of shipwrecked English navigator John Blackthorne (Jarvis) provided Toranaga with crucial intelligence that ultimately decided Japan's epochal civil war."
"Season two advances the narrative a decade later, exploring the continuing interconnected destinies of these men from vastly different civilizations."
While hopeful fans might anticipate new episodes by late 2026, the production team currently focuses on meticulously crafting this eagerly awaited continuation.
