"Ex-Bethesda Dev Predicts Fallout 3 Remaster to Enhance 'Not Good' Gun Combat"

Author : Alexis Update:May 17,2025

With the success of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, fans are eagerly anticipating which Bethesda classic will be next in line for a revival. Rumors suggest that Fallout 3 might be the next game to receive the remaster treatment, especially after leaks surfaced in 2023. Bruce Nesmith, a designer from the original Fallout 3 team, has highlighted areas where improvements could be made, particularly in the realm of gun combat.

Nesmith, speaking to VideoGamer, emphasized that a remastered Fallout 3 would likely feature gunplay more akin to that of Fallout 4. He pointed out that Fallout 3 was Bethesda's first attempt at a shooter-style game, and while it was groundbreaking at the time, it didn't match the standards of contemporary shooters. He anticipates that the enhancements made to gun combat in Fallout 4 would be integrated into a Fallout 3 remaster, significantly improving the shooting mechanics.

Oblivion Remastered, developed by Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, set a high bar for what fans can expect from a Bethesda remaster. It boasts a 4K resolution and 60 frames per second, alongside a host of other improvements. These include refined leveling systems, enhanced character creation, updated combat animations, and revamped in-game menus. Additionally, new dialogue, a true third-person perspective, and advanced lip sync technology have been added, leading some fans to argue that it's more of a remake than a remaster. Bethesda, however, has clarified their choice to label it as a remaster.

Nesmith suggested that a Fallout 3 remaster would likely follow a similar path to Oblivion Remastered, incorporating substantial updates to bring the game up to modern standards. He noted that Oblivion Remastered didn't just aim to match Skyrim from 2011 but aimed to surpass even the most recent graphical updates in Skyrim. He went as far as to call Oblivion Remastered "Oblivion 2.0" due to its impressive overhaul.

Bethesda's current lineup is packed with projects, including The Elder Scrolls VI, potential expansions for Starfield, ongoing updates for Fallout 76, and the upcoming Fallout TV show, which is set to explore New Vegas in its second season. With all these developments, fans have much to look forward to in the coming years.
