Hey, Mary! - Exclusive Graphic Novel Preview

6 ImagesHey, Mary! is crafted by writer Andrew Wheeler, known for works like Cat Fight and Another Castle, and illustrated by Rye Hickman, acclaimed for The Harrowing and Bad Dream. Here's the official synopsis from Oni Press:

Mark is a devout Catholic boy. He attends church, prays diligently, and often worries about the concept of hell. When Mark discovers he has feelings for another boy at his school, he faces a profound struggle to align his emotions with his faith, burdened by centuries of shame and judgment, and the fear of his parents' reaction. Seeking advice, Mark turns to his priest and a local drag performer, but also receives unexpected guidance from iconic figures in Catholic history and lore, including Joan of Arc, Michelangelo, St. Sebastian, and Savonarola. Ultimately, Mark must answer the pivotal question: Can he embrace both his Catholic identity and his sexuality?

"With *Hey, Mary!*, we explore the intricate tensions between queerness and Catholicism through the lens of Mark's teenage angst," Wheeler shared with IGN. "For those who identify as queer and Catholic, these tensions are deeply rooted in centuries of art and expression. By focusing on one teenager's journey, we aim to make this narrative more relatable. In this excerpt, Mark receives an art history lesson from his artsy friend—and crush—Luka, and experiences a fantastical intervention from a celebrated queer Catholic icon. It's a blend of fun, education, and strong opinions!"

Hickman praised the work of colorist Hank Jones, saying, "The colors on the turtles on the first page of the preview are just stunning. *Hey, Mary!* is filled with nods to art history, creating a sequential Easter egg hunt of sorts. Religious iconography throughout the ages is a significant aspect of the Catholic Church's influence. Whether it's *The Pietà* or an anonymous wood carving of Jesus on the cross, Catholic imagery is powerful, evocative, and sometimes carries a charged sexuality that can be challenging to reconcile."

Wheeler added, "Incorporating Catholic art references into the story was a delightful process, and Rye's execution is brilliant. These references enhance the visual storytelling, even if you're not aware of them."

Play*Hey, Mary!* is now available in bookstores and comic shops, and you can also order it on Amazon.

In other comic book news, Mike Mignola is set to return to the Hellboy universe this summer, and we've had the pleasure of speaking with the creative team behind *Spider-Man & Wolverine*.
