Final Fantasy IX's 25th Anniversary Sparks Remake Speculation

Square Enix has unveiled an anniversary website signaling multiple FF9 projects in celebration of the game's quarter-century milestone. Here's what we know about the upcoming celebrations and lingering questions about potential new content.
The 25th Anniversary Celebration Begins

Square Enix commemorates Final Fantasy IX's 25 years with an official portal promising "various commemorative projects including merchandise and collaborations." Currently available through the site are collectible figures, soft plushies, musical vinyls, soundtrack CDs, and illustrated storybooks - with additional announcements planned throughout the anniversary year.
Originally launching July 7, 2000 on PlayStation, FF9 achieved global sales exceeding 8.9 million units. The beloved RPG has seen multiple re-releases, including a 2012 Japanese collector's edition, mobile remasters in 2016, and modern console ports through 2019.
Unanswered Questions About Future Projects

The anniversary news has reignited discussions about two mysterious projects - a potential game remake and the long-dormant animated series. After the critical success of FF7's remake saga, many fans wonder if FF9 (voted 4th best in NHK's franchise ranking) might receive similar treatment.
Meanwhile, the fate of "Final Fantasy IX: The Black Mages' Legacy" anime remains uncertain. Announced in 2021 as a sequel following Vivi's descendants, production stalled when French studio Cyber Group (holding distribution rights) entered bankruptcy proceedings last October. Reportedly two media companies - United Smile and Newen Studios - have expressed interest in reviving the animation project.
