NetEase's collectible card RPG, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened, is shutting down in the Americas, Europe, and Oceania on October 29th, 2024. This end-of-service (EOS) announcement affects only these regions; players in Asia and certain MENA territories can continue playing.
Initially announced in 2020 and released in China in September 2021, the game saw a strong start but faced delays before its global launch on June 27th, 2022. Despite its initial promise—combining Clash Royale-style gameplay with the wizarding world of Hogwarts—the game failed to maintain momentum.
Player feedback points to a shift in game mechanics as a major contributing factor to the EOS. Many players cite a rework of the reward system, which allegedly favored paying players over skilled, free-to-play users, leading to slower progression and frustration. The game has already been removed from the Google Play Store in the affected regions as of August 26th.
While the game's closure is disappointing for many, players in unaffected regions still have the opportunity to experience its unique blend of card battling and Hogwarts-themed gameplay, including dorm life, classes, secrets, and student duels.
