The iconic Killzone franchise from Sony has been on a hiatus for quite some time, but the call for its revival is growing louder. In a recent interview with VideoGamer during the PlayStation: The Concert Tour, Killzone's composer, Joris de Man, voiced his support for bringing the series back to life. De Man acknowledged the existence of fan petitions and shared his hope for the franchise's return, recognizing its iconic status while also noting the challenges it might face due to shifts in gaming preferences and the need to address contemporary sensitivities. "I know that there have been petitions for it," de Man remarked. "I think it's [tricky] because, I can't speak for Guerrilla or anything... I don't know if it will ever happen. I hope it will because I think it is quite an iconic franchise, but I also think it kind of has to take into account kind of the sensitivities and the shift in, I guess, what people want because it is quite bleak in some ways."
When it comes to how Killzone might make its comeback, de Man suggested that a remastered collection could be a more viable option than a completely new entry. "I think [a] remastered one would be successful, I don't know if a new game would be as much," he stated, hinting at the possibility that gamers might be looking for something more casual and quick-paced. The Killzone series is known for its slower, weightier gameplay, particularly evident in Killzone 2, which was criticized for its perceived input lag on the PlayStation 3. The series is also characterized by its dark, gritty visuals and a heavy, oppressive atmosphere.
In a separate interview with the Washington Post, it appeared that Guerrilla Games, the Sony-owned developer behind Killzone, has shifted its focus to the Horizon series. Despite this, it's been over a decade since the release of the last Killzone game, Killzone Shadow Fall, and the prospect of reviving the franchise—or another of Sony's PlayStation shooter series—remains an exciting possibility for many fans. While the future of Killzone remains uncertain, supporters can take heart knowing they have allies like Joris de Man rooting for its return.
