Exciting news for fans of the Suikoden series: Konami and MYTHRIL have just unveiled Suikoden STAR LEAP, a new mobile RPG designed for both Android and iOS devices. This free-to-play game is set to launch later this year, although an exact release date hasn't been announced yet.
For those unfamiliar, Suikoden is a storied franchise that first hit the gaming scene in 1995. Developed and published by Konami, and created by Yoshitaka Murayama, the series draws inspiration from the classic Chinese novel Water Margin, known as Suikoden in Japanese. The saga is renowned for its rich tapestry of political intrigue, mystical True Runes, and the iconic 108 Stars of Destiny. Over the years, the series has seen 11 entries, including spin-offs, with the most recent release dating back to 2012. Rather than offering a direct sequel or a full revival, Konami is now introducing the series to mobile platforms with Suikoden STAR LEAP.
What’s in Store?
Suikoden STAR LEAP will feature a fresh lineup of characters, yet it remains true to the series' core by aiming to assemble 108 heroes. The game embraces the classic Suikoden aesthetic with its pixel art style, which you can see in the teaser trailer below.
The narrative centers on the Rune of Change, one of the 27 True Runes that have shaped the world. The protagonist, Hou, the son of a village chief, experiences a pivotal moment after his first successful hunt when his village is suddenly attacked. This catastrophe propels Hou on a quest for peace, accompanied by Hisui, Shirin, and Shapur. Hisui is Hou's servant with a mysterious emotional suppression; Shirin, his childhood friend, embodies a strong sense of justice; and Shapur, a former general, now serves as a butler.
While the announcement of Suikoden STAR LEAP has stirred excitement, it has also sparked some reservations among the Suikoden community. Fans have been eagerly awaiting a true continuation of the series, and some are concerned that STAR LEAP, which operates as a gacha game, may not fully satisfy their longing for a traditional Suikoden experience.
We'll have a clearer picture once the game is released. In the meantime, keep an eye on the official website for the latest updates.
