Nintendo Switch 2's C Button: A Strange Function Revealed

Author : Logan Update:Apr 02,2025

Updated on January 14: The original version of this article linked to a different Discord server, also called "Nintendo Switch 2." The link has been changed to reflect the real source of the datamining effort. The original story is as follows.

Summary

  • The Nintendo Switch 2's rumored C button may be used for chat functionality.
  • Some recent datamining efforts suggest the Switch 2 will support a group and voice chat feature code-named Campus.
  • The next Nintendo console will reportedly be officially revealed on January 16.

The C button rumored to be a feature on the Nintendo Switch 2 could be dedicated to enhancing chat functionality, according to a recent report. This revelation provides significant insight into one of the most intriguing aspects of Nintendo's upcoming console hardware.

Since late 2024, the Nintendo Switch 2 has been the subject of numerous leaks. Industry analysts believe these leaks stem from the console entering mass production around that time. All leaks consistently show the new console sporting an additional button labeled with a dark gray "C" on the right Joy-Con, just below the home button. However, until now, the purpose of this button remained a mystery.

Recent datamining efforts, detailed in a report from a rapidly growing Discord server focused on the Switch 2, have uncovered references to a feature code-named "Campus" within the latest Switch OS. This feature is believed to introduce group and voice chat capabilities for Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) subscribers.

Nintendo Switch 2 Will Reportedly Support Screen Sharing

The same source indicates that Campus will enable screen sharing and support chat groups of up to 12 users. Given that the feature's codename begins with a "C," it's plausible that the C button on the Switch 2 is related to chat functionality rather than the previously speculated "Campus" or screen casting.

Chat Support Isn't Exactly in Line With the Switch's Kid-Friendly Design

Introducing group and voice chat features would require internet connectivity, likely exclusive to NSO subscribers. However, this move could conflict with Nintendo's efforts to maintain a kid-friendly environment with the original Switch, which deliberately avoided such features. Reintroducing chat capabilities, reminiscent of the Miiverse text chat, might raise concerns about online safety that Nintendo has been keen to avoid.

The true purpose of the C button on the Nintendo Switch 2, and whether it exists at all, may soon be clarified. Multiple sources indicate that the console will be officially announced on Thursday, January 16.
