Pokémon, a global media powerhouse and Nintendo cornerstone since the Game Boy era, boasts hundreds of captivating creatures—collectible in games and as trading cards, with each generation unveiling exciting new additions. Every Nintendo console has featured numerous Pokémon titles, and the Nintendo Switch is no exception.
With Nintendo's official Switch 2 announcement confirming backward compatibility, you can confidently purchase any existing Switch Pokémon game, knowing they'll work on the new console. Below, we've compiled all Nintendo Switch Pokémon games and available information on upcoming Switch 2 releases.
How Many Pokémon Games Are on Nintendo Switch?
A total of 12 Pokémon games have been released for the Nintendo Switch, encompassing mainline entries from generations 8 and 9, plus numerous spin-offs. For this list, we count dual-version mainline games as single releases and exclude Nintendo Switch Online offerings (see separate list below).
Note: 2024 was a gap year for Pokémon releases—over a year since the last new game and two years since the last mainline title. The Pokémon Company instead released Pokémon TCG Pocket, a popular free mobile card game (not included here as it's not a Switch title).
Which Pokémon Game Should You Play in 2024?
For a 2024 Switch Pokémon recommendation, I suggest Pokémon Legends: Arceus. While it deviates from classic Pokémon gameplay, it offers a refreshing open-world experience, enhanced action and RPG elements, greater encounter control, and polished handheld gameplay.
