The beloved Dungeons & Dragons show, Critical Role, is gearing up to unveil its first major video game, with CEO Travis Willingham teasing that an announcement could come "any day." This exciting news came to light during an interview with Business Insider, where Willingham shared that while the game's title and its precise connection to the Critical Role universe remain under wraps, the development team is diligently working on it.
Willingham elaborated on the game's concept, stating, "They'll actually be getting their hand on the stick and controlling the outcome of the story, changing what might be possible from not just some of their favorite characters, but new offerings in the world of Exandria." This suggests a highly interactive experience where players can influence the narrative within the expansive world of Critical Role.
Travis Willingham, who is not only an actor but also a co-founder of Critical Role, started the company alongside other renowned voice actors such as Liam O'Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, and Matthew Mercer. The show has since expanded into a vast universe, with one of its most notable projects being the Amazon Prime Video series, Critical Role: The Legend of Vox Machina.
While the upcoming video game will be part of the Critical Role universe, it won't necessarily tie directly into existing projects. In a December 2024 interview with Rolling Stone, Willingham mentioned that the team was in "active pursuit" of developing a video game spinoff, nearing the end of a long development journey. It's still uncertain whether the game will follow one of the group's established campaigns or introduce an original story within the Critical Role world.
The team anticipated making an announcement before the end of 2024 or early 2025. Now, as we progress through the year, the announcement seems imminent. Willingham reflected on the team's approach to game development, noting to Rolling Stone, "Those collaborations we’ve had with various partners have been little toe dips in the pool just to see how it feels. You know, there’s a lot of upheaval in the interactive space right now. And we’ve seen studios sort of bear and weather those strains. It’s trying to become smarter about it and find out how we might fit into that larger ecosystem."
As of now, no release date for the Critical Role video game has been disclosed. While fans eagerly await more details on this exciting new project, they can look forward to the first details on The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4.
