The Last of Us Season 2's Abby Didn't Bulk Up Because HBO Didn't Need to Emulate Certain Video Game Mechanics, Neil Druckmann Says

The HBO adaptation of The Last of Us Part 2 will take a different approach to Abby's character, with actress Kaitlyn Dever not needing to bulk up for the role. Showrunner and Naughty Dog studio head Neil Druckmann explained to Entertainment Weekly that Abby's physicality in the game was designed to feel mechanically distinct from Ellie, reflecting the different gameplay styles between the two characters. However, in the TV series, the focus shifts more towards drama rather than the constant violent action of the game, allowing for a different portrayal of Abby.

Druckmann emphasized the challenge of finding someone as talented as Dever for the role, noting that the game's requirement for players to switch between Ellie and Abby necessitated contrasting physical attributes. In the game, Ellie was meant to feel smaller and more agile, while Abby was designed to be more like Joel, with a brute strength that allowed her to handle situations physically. In the series, this aspect is less emphasized due to the different storytelling priorities.

Craig Mazin, the other showrunner, added that the adaptation offers a chance to explore Abby's character in a new light, portraying her as possibly more physically vulnerable but with a stronger spirit. This approach raises questions about the origins and manifestations of her formidable nature, which will be a focal point in the series.

The adaptation of The Last of Us Part 2 is set to span multiple seasons, unlike the first season which covered the entire original game in one go. Season 2 is planned to consist of seven episodes, with a "natural breakpoint" that could lead into a potential Season 3, although it hasn't been officially greenlit yet.

The character of Abby has been a source of controversy and toxicity, leading to harassment and threats directed at Naughty Dog employees and actress Laura Bailey. This hostility has even affected the production of Season 2, with extra security measures put in place for Kaitlyn Dever. Isabel Merced, who plays Dina in the season, highlighted the absurdity of the situation, reminding fans that Abby is a fictional character.
