Dune: Awakening's developers at Funcom are gearing up for a potentially packed launch while preparing for a significant large-scale beta test this weekend. Dive into the details of Funcom's server strategy and what fans can anticipate from the upcoming release.
Dune: Awakening Pre-Launch Updates
Funcom’s Servers Are Prepared
As the release date of Dune: Awakening approaches, Funcom is reassuring fans of their readiness for a possibly crowded launch in June. In a Steam post dated May 7, the developer addressed key concerns following the initial closed beta, focusing on server capacity and multiplayer mechanics.
Players will begin their journey by selecting a server within a "World," which contains at least 20 servers. This setup allows for interactions among players from different servers within the same World.
Addressing fan concerns about server load and queue times, Funcom anticipates a high volume of players at launch, with some servers reaching capacity. They've assured that there will be "thousands of servers grouped together in hundreds of Worlds available at launch."
Funcom detailed the server dynamics, stating, "What’s important to note is that while a Hagga Basin server can support 40 people playing concurrently, the way populations ebb and flow over the course of a day means that it still supports several hundred people picking that server as their home." The closed beta helped them rigorously test these systems, implementing measures to prevent servers from becoming overcrowded by limiting character creation on popular servers.
While Dune: Awakening emphasizes large-scale multiplayer, it remains accessible for solo play. Players can explore Arrakis on their own within the multiplayer environment. Single-player and private servers, however, will not be available at launch but are planned for post-launch updates.
What To Expect During The Large-Scale Beta Weekend
Ahead of the official launch, Funcom has shared insights into the upcoming large-scale beta weekend. In a post on the Dune: Awakening's official website on May 8, they outlined what participants can expect.
Access to the beta weekend is available by wishlisting and requesting access on the game's Steam page, signing up on the official website, or receiving an access code during the Global LAN party on May 10.
The large-scale beta will run from May 9 to May 12. Below is a timetable for the streaming event, tailored to different time zones:
