We've shared our expert take on Ninja Gaiden 4, but what about those new to the series? Does this latest installment in the notoriously challenging action franchise offer enough for newcomers to grasp? Can you follow the narrative if you aren't familiar with Ryu Hayabusa or Yakumo?
This was my perspective heading into the gamescom 2025 session with Team Ninja's Masakazu Hirayama and PlatinumGames' Yuji Nakao, co-directors of this striking collaboration from Xbox Game Studios. As Nakao flawlessly defeated a boss on the large screen during our closed-door presentation, I marveled at the slick, high-speed ninja combat unfolding before me—yet felt daunted by it all. While not unfamiliar with action games (I'm fond of Capcom's Devil May Cry series), I know that Ninja Gaiden operates on an entirely different tier.
Microsoft, the publisher behind Ninja Gaiden 4, hopes this entry resonates not only with hardcore franchise veterans but also with a broader audience of action gamers. Essentially, they aim to persuade players like me to give it a try. Consequently, my interview questions diverge slightly from those asked by IGN's renowned Ninja Gaiden specialists below.
