Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to launch in fall 2025, exclusively on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. This marks another console-first move by Rockstar Games, a decision that has left many PC gamers disappointed. While this aligns with Rockstar’s past release patterns, it raises questions in today’s gaming landscape where PC plays an increasingly vital role in a multiplatform game's overall success.
IGN recently asked Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick about the absence of a PC release for GTA 6. In his response, Zelnick hinted that a PC version could arrive eventually—just not at launch.
“With regard to others in our lineup, we don't always go across all platforms simultaneously. Historically, Rockstar has started with some platforms and then historically moved to other platforms.”
This statement suggests that while GTA 6 will debut on consoles, a PC release might follow sometime after. For longtime Rockstar fans, this isn’t unexpected—the studio has often delayed PC releases for its major titles. However, given the scale and anticipated popularity of GTA 6, many had hoped this would be the title to break the trend.
The delay could mean PC players won’t get access to the game until 2026 at the earliest, possibly even later. With the official release window still set for fall 2025, Rockstar seems committed to delivering a polished console experience first.
In late 2023, a former Rockstar developer spoke out about the staggered release strategy, urging PC gamers to give the studio the “benefit of the doubt.” He explained that developing for multiple platforms simultaneously can be technically demanding, especially for a game as ambitious as GTA 6.
From a business perspective, launching without PC support could represent a significant missed opportunity. According to Zelnick, the PC version of a multiplatform title can account for up to 40% or more of total sales. That makes the initial lack of a PC version particularly surprising.
Zelnick also acknowledged the growing influence of PC gaming amid slowing console sales. As Sony and Microsoft have yet to announce next-generation hardware, the current generation—and notably the PS5 Pro—is expected to benefit from the excitement surrounding GTA 6.
“We have seen PC become a much more and more important part of what used to be a console business, and I wouldn't be surprised to see that trend continue.”
Zelnick believes that major titles like GTA 6 tend to drive console sales, encouraging new users to enter the ecosystem. If history repeats itself, the game’s launch could give the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S a notable boost in 2025—even if a PC version arrives later.
While tech analysts remain skeptical about whether even a high-end system like the PS5 Pro will run GTA 6 at 4K/60fps, many still expect it to be one of the best ways to experience the game at launch.
