Following the Game Awards announcement of an Ōkami sequel, speculation immediately arose regarding its development engine. IGN exclusively confirms that Capcom's proprietary RE Engine will power the game, based on interviews with key project leads.
In an extensive interview, Machine Head Works producer Kiyohiko Sakata confirmed the use of RE Engine, highlighting their role as a bridge between Capcom (IP holder and director of the game's overall vision) and Clover (lead developer). Machine Head Works' experience with Capcom, previous collaborations with director Hideki Kamiya, and familiarity with RE Engine are key to the project. They are providing crucial support to Clover, who lacks prior experience with the engine. Furthermore, Machine Head Works has personnel with experience on the original Ōkami, further bolstering development.
When asked about the appeal of RE Engine and its suitability for an Ōkami sequel, Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi succinctly stated, "Yes," elaborating that Capcom believes Kamiya's artistic vision couldn't be realized without it. Kamiya himself added that RE Engine's renowned expressive capabilities are expected by fans.
Sakata further hinted that RE Engine may allow the team to achieve goals unattainable with the original Ōkami's technology. He suggested that current technology, coupled with RE Engine, enables them to surpass their previous ambitions.
RE Engine, initially developed for Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, has powered numerous Capcom titles, including the Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, Street Fighter, and Dragon's Dogma franchises. While many RE Engine games feature realistic art styles, the prospect of its application to Ōkami's distinct aesthetic is intriguing. Capcom's development of the successor engine, REX, and its gradual integration into RE Engine might even introduce some REX elements into the Ōkami sequel.
