Elden Ring Nightreign Will Have Procedurally Generated Terrains
Includes Volcanoes, Poison Swamps, and Forests
In an exclusive interview featured in PC Gamer's Magazine Issue 405, and reported by Games Radar on February 10, 2025, Elden Ring Nightreign's director Junya Ishizaki unveiled a groundbreaking feature: the game's map will dynamically generate elements such as volcanoes, forests, and swamps. This addition not only enhances the replayability but also stays true to the challenging essence of Soulslike games.
Ishizaki explained that the game's map will undergo "large-scale changes to terrain in the form of procedurally appearing volcanoes or swamps or forests." This means players will encounter different environmental hazards that necessitate strategic adjustments in navigating the terrain and confronting enemies.
The inspiration behind this feature stems from the developers' vision to transform the map into a "giant dungeon," offering players endless exploration possibilities. For instance, forested areas will serve as natural cover for both players and adversaries, adding an extra layer of tactical gameplay. Ishizaki noted, "Once you've made that choice, maybe you have an idea of how you want to strategize against that boss, and this might change how you approach the map. We wanted to offer players that agency, to decide 'I need to go after a poison weapon this time to face this boss.'"
Fans of the series might also encounter familiar yet treacherous terrains like the Swamp of Aeonia and Lake of Rot, which slow players down and impose the Rot debuff. These procedurally generated landscapes could also host specific enemies such as Giant Lobsters or Crabs, Runebears, Magma Wyrms, or other iconic foes from previous Souls games.
