"Vampire Survivors and Balatro Shine at BAFTA Games Awards"

Author : Hunter Update:Apr 11,2025

The BAFTA Games Awards concluded last night, celebrating some of the most impactful games of the year. Among the top winners were Balatro and Vampire Survivors, both of which have made significant waves in the mobile gaming community despite the absence of platform-specific categories at the awards.

While the BAFTAs may not boast the extensive viewership of Geoff Keighley's Game Awards, they hold a higher level of prestige in the gaming industry. The 2024 BAFTA Games Awards did not feature specific mobile categories, yet two notable mobile titles managed to secure prestigious awards.

Balatro, a breakout roguelike deckbuilder, clinched the Debut Game award. This victory has sparked a surge of interest within the industry, with many publishers now scouring indie games in hopes of finding the next big hit. On the other hand, Vampire Survivors, which was crowned Best Game in 2023, took home the Best Evolving Game award this year. This is a remarkable feat, considering it competed against major titles like Diablo IV and Final Fantasy XIV Online.

BAFTA Games Awards 2024

What, no mobile? The BAFTA Games Awards have a unique approach by not recognizing platform-specific achievements, a decision that was solidified in 2019. Despite the absence of mobile-specific categories, games like Vampire Survivors and Genshin Impact have still managed to gain recognition at the awards.

In a previous conversation with Luke Hebblethwaite from the BAFTA games team, it was explained that the organization believes that games should be judged on their merits, regardless of the platform they are played on. This philosophy underscores the BAFTAs' approach to gaming awards.

Both Balatro and Vampire Survivors have undoubtedly benefited from their availability on mobile platforms, which has helped expand their reach and impact. While the lack of platform-specific categories may affect visibility for mobile games, the success of these titles at the BAFTAs suggests that mobile games can still achieve significant recognition.
