Microsoft Unveils Handheld Console Blending Xbox and Windows Best Features

Summary

  • Microsoft is set to enter the handheld gaming market, blending the strengths of Xbox and Windows.
  • While details about the Xbox handheld console are limited, Microsoft is committed to expanding into mobile gaming.
  • Microsoft aims to enhance Windows for handheld gaming by improving its functionality and ensuring a seamless experience.

Microsoft's entry into the handheld gaming market promises to merge the best of Xbox and Windows experiences. As the gaming industry sees a surge in portable hardware with the upcoming Switch 2, the rise of handheld PCs, and Sony's PlayStation Portal, Xbox is keen to join the fray and leverage this trend to enhance Windows for gaming on the go.

Currently, Xbox services are accessible on devices like the Razer Edge and Logitech G Cloud, but Microsoft has not yet launched its own hardware in this category. However, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer has confirmed that a handheld Xbox console is in development, though specifics remain under wraps. Microsoft is clearly taking the shift toward mobile gaming seriously.

In an interview with The Verge, Jason Ronald, VP of Next Generation at Microsoft, hinted at more updates possibly coming later this year, which might include an official announcement about the new handheld. Ronald emphasized Microsoft's goal to combine the best aspects of Xbox and Windows for a more cohesive gaming experience. This approach aims to address the challenges faced by Windows on handheld devices, such as clunky navigation and troubleshooting, as demonstrated by devices like the ROG Ally X.

Microsoft Wants to Make Windows Great for Handheld Gaming

Ronald stressed Microsoft's ambition to make Windows an excellent platform for gaming across all devices, including handhelds. He pointed out that Windows was not originally designed for use with joysticks, which can detract from the portable PC experience. To overcome this, Microsoft plans to draw inspiration from the Xbox console operating system. This aligns with earlier comments from Phil Spencer, who expressed a desire for handheld PCs to offer an Xbox-like experience, ensuring consistency across different hardware.

By focusing on improved functionality, Microsoft aims to distinguish itself in the portable gaming market, whether through a revamped portable OS or a first-party handheld console. For instance, Microsoft's flagship franchise, Halo, has faced technical challenges on the Steam Deck. Enhancing the handheld environment for such titles could significantly elevate the gaming experience. While the specifics of Microsoft's plans are yet to be revealed, fans can look forward to more information later in the year.
