Avowed, slated for release in 2025, promises a richly detailed experience, as revealed by its game director in a recent preview. The game's intricate design ensures player choices, both large and small, significantly impact the overall narrative.
Avowed: A Complex World with Multiple Destinies
Navigating Political Intrigue in The Living Lands
Obsidian Entertainment's Avowed offers players continuous opportunities to shape their character and experience. Game director Carrie Patel emphasizes the game's design, stating that every interaction contributes to a cohesive and personalized journey."The game provides constant opportunities for players to express themselves and explore their character's alignment," Patel explains. "It encourages players to be mindful of their experience, asking themselves: 'When am I engaged? When am I curious? When does my interest wane? What keeps me invested?'"
Patel further highlights that outcomes in Avowed are directly tied to exploration and discovery within the vast world of Eora, particularly in the politically charged Living Lands. "I've enjoyed weaving together the narratives of these two worlds," she adds.
Players assume the role of an Aedyran Empire envoy, tasked with investigating a spiritual plague while simultaneously pursuing their political goals. "Meaningful roleplaying comes from providing players with depth to explore," Patel notes. "It's about defining who you want to be and how your actions reflect that identity."
Beyond its deep RPG mechanics, Avowed boasts strategic combat incorporating magic, swords, and firearms. "The abilities and weapon combinations you choose lead to vastly different gameplay experiences with each playthrough," Patel confirms.
In a conversation with IGN, Patel revealed the game features numerous endings, with a wide array of possible combinations. "We have double-digit ending slides, and many different combinations are possible," she explains. "True to Obsidian's style, your ending is a direct reflection of your choices throughout the game, based on your interactions and actions."
