Lost Soul Aside's Steam Release Frustrates Gamers Due to Sony's Region Lock
UltiZero Games' highly anticipated action RPG, Lost Soul Aside, faces significant backlash from PC gamers due to a region lock impacting over 130 countries. This restriction, stemming from Sony's limitations on PlayStation-published games, prevents the game from appearing on Steam in unsupported PSN regions, despite not requiring a PSN account to play.
The situation has sparked outrage among players, forcing many to forgo a purchase. Workarounds, such as creating a Steam account in a PSN-supported region, are seen as inconvenient and unacceptable. This move is particularly perplexing given PlayStation's recent removal of PSN requirements for its PC titles. Social media is abuzz with complaints, highlighting the frustration felt by the gaming community.
A Blend of Fantasy and Realism
Lost Soul Aside, first unveiled in 2016, maintains its unique blend of fantasy elements and realistic visuals. UltiZero Games CEO Yang Bing, in interviews with IGN (February 20, 2025) and Famitsu (February 20, 2025), discussed the game's stylistic evolution and influences.
The game's design draws inspiration from titles like Final Fantasy XV, evident in protagonist Kaser's design – a juxtaposition of cartoonish features and realistic textures. The fast-paced, flashy combat system, meanwhile, takes cues from Bayonetta, Ninja Gaiden, and Devil May Cry, offering players depth and customization options regardless of skill level.
Key Influences and Combat System
Yang Bing highlighted the significant influence of Final Fantasy on Kaser's design, emphasizing the fusion of realistic and fantasy elements in the character's clothing and overall appearance. The combat system, however, finds its roots in the dynamic action of Bayonetta, Ninja Gaiden, and Devil May Cry. Bing stressed the continuous refinement of this system, aiming for a balance between speed and depth, allowing players to develop their own unique combat styles.
Lost Soul Aside launches May 30, 2025, on PlayStation 5 and PC. The region lock, however, casts a significant shadow over its PC release, leaving many potential players disappointed and frustrated.
