Baldur's Gate 3 publisher thinks developers should become pirates to clean up BioWare's act

Recent layoffs at BioWare, developer of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, have sparked a wider conversation about the gaming industry's current state. Larian Studios' publishing director, Michael Daus, weighed in on social media, arguing for greater employee appreciation and accountability at the leadership level.

Daus contends that widespread layoffs between or after projects are avoidable. He emphasizes the critical importance of retaining institutional knowledge for future projects. While acknowledging the financial pressures that sometimes necessitate "trimming the fat," he questions the aggressive efficiency strategies of large corporations, suggesting they're often unnecessary. This approach, he argues, only works consistently with a string of successful releases; otherwise, layoffs are a blunt, extreme cost-cutting measure.

Daus points out that the strategic failures of upper management are ultimately responsible, yet lower-level employees always bear the brunt. He uses the analogy of a pirate ship, where the captain would be the first to be thrown overboard in times of crisis, suggesting that video game companies should adopt a similar approach to accountability.
