Palworld's Stunning Success: Pocketpair's CEO Rejects AAA Path, Embraces Indie Future
Pocketpair, the creator of the wildly successful Palworld, has amassed significant profits, potentially enough to fund a "beyond AAA" title. However, CEO Takuro Mizobe has once again clarified the studio's commitment to a different path. Let's delve into his reasoning.
Palworld's Financial Triumph and Pocketpair's Indie Focus
The creature-catching survival game, Palworld, has exceeded expectations, generating "tens of billions of yen" in revenue (approximately tens of millions of USD). This financial windfall could easily fund a project surpassing typical AAA game budgets. Yet, Mizobe maintains that Pocketpair isn't structured to handle such a large-scale undertaking.
Mizobe revealed that Palworld's development leveraged profits from previous titles, Craftopia and Overdungeon. Despite the current financial success, he's opted against immediately scaling up, citing the company's relative youth and lack of infrastructure for a massive project.
"Expanding based on these profits would create a project exceeding AAA scale, but our organizational maturity can't support it," Mizobe explained to GameSpark. He prefers projects aligning with the indie game model, emphasizing his preference for smaller-scale, creatively interesting ventures.
Pocketpair intends to explore the limits of its current indie model, leveraging improved game engines and industry conditions to achieve global success without the complexities of a large AAA team. Mizobe credits the indie community for the studio's growth and expresses a desire to give back.
Expanding the Palworld Universe Beyond the Game
Earlier this year, Mizobe also stated that the studio wouldn't be expanding its team or relocating to larger offices, despite the influx of funds. Instead, Pocketpair is focusing on expanding the Palworld IP into various media.
Palworld, currently in early access, has received widespread praise for its engaging gameplay and consistent updates, including the recent PvP arena and the Sakurajima island expansion. Furthermore, the newly formed Palworld Entertainment, a collaboration with Sony, will oversee global licensing and merchandising.
