Phil Spencer Revives Ninja Gaiden Franchise

Team Ninja producer Fumihiko Yasuda has shared that the studio has been eager to develop a new installment in the Ninja Gaiden series, but struggled to settle on a compelling concept. The breakthrough came when Koei Tecmo president Hisashi Koinuma and PlatinumGames head Atsushi Inaba discussed the project. Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, then joined the conversation and proposed a collaboration among the three companies to bring the game to life.

Spencer revealed that discussions had been ongoing since 2017, following his initial conversation with Team Ninja about a potential sequel. After years of deliberation, the perfect partner was found in PlatinumGames, renowned for their work on fast-paced action titles such as Bayonetta and NieR: Automata.

Last week saw the announcement of Ninja Gaiden 4, and alongside this, a re-release of Ninja Gaiden 2 Black—an enhanced version of the Xbox 360 classic—surprisingly hit the shelves on Xbox, PS5, and PC.

The debut trailer indicates that Ryu Hayabusa, the iconic ninja, will take the lead in this action-packed slasher. The gameplay trailer further teases that Ninja Gaiden 4 will introduce several innovative mechanics not seen in earlier entries, including the ability to navigate swiftly through environments using wires and rails.

While DOOM: The Dark Ages was the main draw at Developer_Direct, the event also spotlighted Ninja Gaiden 4, the eagerly awaited sequel to Koei Tecmo's beloved franchise. Fans can mark their calendars for a fall 2025 release.
