Marathon faces plagiarism claims amid FY2025 release

Marathon Faces Plagiarism Controversy But Maintains 2025 Release Date

Despite plagiarism allegations swirling around Marathon, Sony remains committed to its fiscal year 2025 release schedule. The controversy follows Bungie's recent Concord disappointment, prompting Sony executives to rethink their quality control processes for this high-stakes launch.

September Launch Proceeds Despite Art Controversy

Sony Confirms Marathon FY2025 Release Timeline

Recent Sony financial presentations confirm Marathon's planned FY2025 release remains unchanged. During Sony's June 13 Game & Network Services briefing, executives highlighted Bungie's ambitious new title among their upcoming live-service releases, emphasizing their goal for "Strong Early Engagement" with this innovative project.

The plagiarism issue surfaced last month when digital artist ANTIREAL publicly accused Bungie of using her 2017 artwork without permission in Marathon's alpha build. Visual evidence showed her signature poorly obscured in game assets, sparking heated discussions within the gaming community.

Bungie responded quickly on social media, admitting a former employee had improperly included the artwork in game files. During a May 17 developer stream, Art Director Joseph Cross explained the oversight occurred during asset processing in 2020 and promised stricter review procedures. However, skeptical fans noted many Bungie artists already followed ANTIREAL's work publicly.

Bungie Addresses Marathon Plagiarism Claims

While Bungie reached out to resolve the situation privately, ANTIREAL has remained silent following her initial allegations. With no further updates since May and Sony's latest presentation only broadly confirming FY2025 timing, the studio appears focused on preparing for launch.

Sony Applies Concord Lessons to Marathon

Sony Executives Discuss Live Service Strategy

Sony Interactive Entertainment's Hermen Hulst recently discussed the company's live-service strategy following Concord's disappointing reception. As Bungie's first original IP in over a decade, Marathon represents a crucial test for Sony's evolving approach to ongoing game support and quality assurance.

"We're implementing much more rigorous processes across research and review stages," Hulst explained during Sony's June 13 fireside chat. Emphasizing Marathon's innovative design, he stressed the importance of extensive testing cycles before launch and throughout the game's lifespan.

Marathon Developer Bungie Faces High Expectations

With industry scrutiny mounting after the plagiarism incident and Concord's struggles, Bungie faces significant pressure to deliver. Sony executives maintain optimism, framing the development process as iterative. "We're giving this title every opportunity to succeed," Hulst affirmed, though acknowledging the challenges of today's competitive live-service market.

Scheduled for September 23, 2025 release across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC platforms, Marathon's development journey continues under increased public scrutiny following recent controversies.
