Avowed Director Wants To Expand The World They've Created
Possibility of Expansions or Sequels
The release of Avowed has been a triumph, with both Microsoft and Obsidian expressing satisfaction with its sales figures. In a recent interview with Bloomberg on February 22, 2025, Avowed Game Director Carrie Patel discussed the potential for expanding the game's universe through expansions or a sequel.
While Obsidian has not officially announced any plans, Patel expressed a keen interest in further developing the game's world. She remarked, "Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it." This enthusiasm suggests a bright future for the franchise.
Changes in Avowed During Development
The development of Avowed was a journey filled with challenges and transformations. Patel shared insights into the process, describing it as "messy" but ultimately successful. Initially started in 2018, the project faced numerous hurdles, including the decision by Obsidian to sell the company amid financial pressures, despite the success of titles like Fallout: New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity.
Microsoft's acquisition of Obsidian in 2020 marked a turning point, leading to the announcement of Avowed. However, the team had to abandon several planned features, including multiplayer aspects, and in January 2021, a leadership change prompted a reboot of the game.
Under Patel's leadership, managing over 80 people in production, the focus shifted to enhancing the narrative and lore from the Pillars of Eternity series. The game transitioned from an open world to open zones, allowing for more detailed and immersive environments. Patel reflected on the development experience, noting, "There’s this interesting thing I’ve seen on every project I’ve worked on or seen during my time at the studio — things are messy, messy, messy, then they start coming together."
Obsidian's Ambitions for Pillars of Eternity Tactics
With Avowed revitalizing interest in the Pillars of Eternity universe, Obsidian is now exploring the possibility of creating a tactics game set in this world. During a Twitch Livestream on February 23, 2025, Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Director Josh Sawyer expressed the studio's interest in developing Pillars: Tactics.
Sawyer highlighted the appeal of tactics games among both the team and fans, stating, "Pillars: Tactics is a thing that a lot of people would like, a lot of people at the studio would like to work on; there are a lot of people who like tactics games." However, he also acknowledged the challenges involved, particularly in defining the scope of the project in terms of team size, visual quality, and overall scale.
Despite these ambitions, Sawyer remains committed to the idea of developing Pillars of Eternity 3, envisioning it with a significant budget akin to that of Baldur’s Gate 3, which stands at around $100 million—a stark contrast to the budget of Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire.
