Doom: The Dark Ages – A Return to Brutal Roots
Following the critically acclaimed Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal, id Software is shifting gears with Doom: The Dark Ages, a prequel that harkens back to the franchise's origins. Instead of the platforming elements of Eternal, The Dark Ages emphasizes intense, close-quarters combat with a focus on powerful melee weapons.
While the signature arsenal returns – including the skull-crushing, ammo-recycling marvel seen in the reveal trailer – the game heavily features three melee weapons: an electrified gauntlet, a flail, and the Shield Saw. Game director Hugo Martin described the combat as "stand and fight," emphasizing the power fantasy of directly engaging hordes of enemies.
Martin cites inspiration from the original Doom, Frank Miller's Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, and Zack Snyder's 300 as key influences. This is reflected in the game's design, featuring large-scale combat encounters reminiscent of 300's battle scenes and the original Doom's arena-style levels. The Glory Kill system has been redesigned for fluidity, allowing for kills from any angle. Levels are designed for exploration and offer non-linear progression.
Addressing criticism of Doom Eternal's codex-heavy narrative, The Dark Ages will feature cutscenes to deliver its story, promising a "summer blockbuster" narrative that expands the Doom universe. The control scheme has been streamlined for improved intuitiveness, and the progression system has been simplified to a single currency, focusing on tangible gameplay rewards rather than lore. Difficulty settings offer extensive customization.
The reveal trailer's impressive giant mech (the Atlan) and cybernetic dragon sequences are not isolated events but offer unique gameplay experiences with their own abilities and mini-bosses. Notably, The Dark Ages will not include a multiplayer mode, allowing the team to fully concentrate on the single-player experience.
Martin highlights the deliberate departure from Doom Eternal's design, aiming for a return to the core principles of the original Doom while still offering a fresh and powerful experience. The focus on streamlined controls, intense melee combat, and a simplified progression system suggests a return to the visceral, brutal gameplay that defined the original. The game's May 15th release date is eagerly anticipated.
